The Smokestack Series from Boulevard

The Smokestack Series from Boulevard Brewing (KC, MO) is an excellent example of how big beers done well and packaged beautifully can quickly become highly sought after drinkable treasures. The first offerings from this series were released in November of 1997. They've now released eleven total and number twelve is set to be an Imperial Pilsner brewed as a collaboration between Boulevard and none other than the one and only Trappist Brewery Orval! All of these releases are limited and each of them is highly regarded. If you are lucky enough to get your paws on these be sure to do it. Cheers!

The Smokestack Series in order of release date:

Boulevard Saison - "This golden ale is delightfully effervescent and generously hopped. Hints of lemon zest appear in the lightly phenolic aroma, while the flavor brings spicy tastes of black pepper and lemon grass. Citrus and pineapple notes are discernable in the slightly astringent finish." 6.2% ABV

Long Strange Tripel - "The Tripel style originated in the Trappist brewery of Westmalle Abbey in pre-war Antwerp province. Its numeric moniker results from the old Belgian practice of naming beers based on the amount of malt used in the brew. A "Simple" was the lightest-bodied brew. Doubling the malt bill resulted in a "Dubbel", while a "Tripel" contained three times the amount of malt (and, as a result, three times the amount of alcohol.) True to style, our Long Strange Tripel is a golden ale with estery aromas, a dense, creamy head and a sweet finish." 9.0% ABV

Double-Wide IPA - "Double-Wide I.P.A. uses Zeus and Magnum hops for both bittering and aroma, with Ahtanum hops added solely for aroma. Two additional dry hopping regimens employ Ahtanum, Centennial, and Chinook varietals. The resulting beer – not surprisingly – has a hop forward aroma, redolent of peach and apricot. The assertive flavor bursts forth with citrus notes of blood orange and lemon, a caramel malt backbone serves to balance the intensity of the hops. There is little restraint in the flavor of this beer; it is certainly not for the pedestrian palate." 8.5% ABV

The Sixth Glass Quadruple - "This devilishly strong ale is dark auburn in color, with a creamy tan head. Fruity aromas of date and gif precede flavors of prune, raisin, and subtle hints of chocolate. This malty, full-bodied beer finishes with a warming Madeira essence that begs for another taste. As it ages, the Port flavors will further develop. Stored upright in a cool, dark place, this beer will mature for up to 10 years." 10.5% ABV

Saison Brett - "Our gold-medal winning Saison (Mondial de la Biere, Montreal, 2008) was the inspiration for this limited edition ale. We brewed a slightly stronger version that was then dry hopped, followed by bottle conditioning with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts an earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale is given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the "Brett" character if that’s what you’re after." 8.5% ABV

Bourbon Barrel Quad (BBQ) - "Based loosely on the Smokestack Series Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel, after fermentation on cherries, was separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels, where is aged for varying lengths of time, in some cases as long as a year. Selected barrels were then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore." 11.8% ABV

Boulevard Imperial Stout - "No. 7 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. Imperial stouts, like india pale ales, were originally brewed high in alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, in this case not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, plus wheat, rye, oats and spelt. Hopping is equally expansive, balancing the body of the beer with a very respectable 55 IBUs. Approximately 10% of the batch was barrel-aged for four months, then blended with fresh beer before bottling. Za Vas!" 11.0% ABV

Two Jokers Double Wit - "Conventional wisdom holds that there are two sides to every story. Though our new Two Jokers Double-Wit is hardly conventional, there are in fact two distinct pieces to its personality. On the one hand, it’s a revival of the classic Belgian “wit,” or “white” beer, a style dating back to the late 1800s. The use of lactic fermentation and ingredients like coriander and orange peel are hallmarks of the style, as are the cloudiness and the pale color that give the beer its name. On the other hand, it’s a modern, uniquely American specialty brew; big, flavorful, and spiced with cardamom, lavender, and grains of paradise. Two Jokers has a refreshing tartness, nicely balanced by a well rounded malt bill graced by notes of caramel. Belgian yeast brings floral aromas with hints of banana and clove, and a citrusy zing to the tongue. Two Jokers Double-Wit pairs well with the lighter fare of spring and summer, such as grilled fish or chicken, feta cheese, fresh garden salads, and fruit compotes. Look closely now: is it two jesters on the label, or a single beautiful glass of beer?" 8.0% ABV

Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale - “Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapes fof to a peppery, dry finish.” 8.5% ABV

Seeyoulator Dopplebock - "Medium amber in color, Seeyoulator offers a heady, estery banana aroma. A luscious maltiness predominates, with balancing notes from Hallertau hops. Cedar aging lends just a hint of spice to the finish." 8.5% ABV

Harvest Dance Wheat Wine - "Our Harvest Dance Wheat Wine is a celebration of John Barleycorn’s cousin wheat, the great staple crop of Middle America. Wheat wines are a somewhat recent stylistic development, akin to barleywines in strength, but brewed with a large portion of wheat malt, which provides a soft mouthfeel to balance the big body of these warming brews. We add a generous helping of Hallertau and Citra hops, and age the beer on both French and American oak, resulting in a beer that opens up with a warming burst of tropical fruit flavors, adding subtle Sauvignon Blanc notes before rounding slowly to a dry, oaky finish. This is a perfect beer for sharing with friends and family as we gather together for the fall and winter holidays. Pairs well with aged cheeses or seasonal squash and pumpkin dishes." 9.1% ABV

 (wish I had more)

More about Boulevard: Boulevard Brewing Company has grown to be the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest, dedicated to the craft of producing fresh, flavorful beers using traditional ingredients and the best of both old and new brewing techniques. Boulevard’s portfolio of six year-round and five seasonal beers are available in a 17-state region stretching from Utah to Alabama, and from North Dakota to Texas.

Vermont Beer Haul

I am just back from a few days up in Vermont for work and was able to get my hands on some pretty limited release beers. While up there I went to the Alchemist and met up with Sean Lawson of Lawson's Finest Liquids, Vermont's newest and smallest brewery. I brought him some Pretty Things beers and he in turn gave me some bottles of his own beers. He also mentioned that Rock Art was brewing a crazy pumpkin spruce beer and I was lucky enough to come across some bottles of that as well. I am very excited to try all of these as I don't have a clue as to when I'll see them again.

From left to right:

Stony Hill Fresh Hop Harvest - Lawson's Finest Liquids (Warren, VT)

Maple Nipple - Lawson's Finest Liquids (Warren, VT)

Hopzilla Double IPA - Lawson's Finest Liquids (Warren, VT)

Images from Brewery Ommegang

If you think you've passed it keep driving. That's my advice when you go looking for Brewery Ommegang.

The iconic farmhouse-style brewery is located on a country road a few miles outside the baseball mecca of Cooperstown, New York. When you finally do pull into the driveway you'll be greeted warmly by that famous archway that has come to be one of the symbols for the brewery. It's an absolutely amazing place in a pristine location. Ommegang is a definite must when it comes to breweries to visit on the east coast.

Great Lakes Beer Haul

I'm finally home after a week of work in upstate New York. It was an exhausting week but I managed to do some beer related things in my free time. I finally visited Ommegang in Cooperstown, had a chance to meet Kim from Beer Lens at The Tap & Mallet in Rochester (awesome beer bar!), had a beer and some food at the legendary Blue Tusk in Syracuse, visited the two brewpubs in Lake Placid and of course I stocked up at Beers of the World (also in Rochester). Above are a few "souvenirs" from my trip.

From left to right:

Edmund Fitzgerald Porter - Great Lakes Brewing Co. (Cleveland, OH)

Oktoberfest - Great Lakes Brewing Co. (Cleveland, OH)

Commodore Perry IPA- Great Lakes Brewing Co. (Cleveland, OH)

Glockenspiel Weizenbock- Great Lakes Brewing Co. (Cleveland, OH)

"Cave-Aged" Abbey Ale - Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, NY)

Double Dark Cream Porter - Custom Brewcrafters (Honeoye Falls, NY)

Oatmeal Stout - Goose Island Brewing Co. (Chicago, IL)

Harvest Ale - Goose Island Brewing Co. (Chicago, IL)

Pipers Scotch Ale - Sprecher Brewing Co. (Glendale, WI)

...and an Ommegang re-usable cork that will keep those big strong beers fresh for 1-2 days so I don't have to drink them all in one night (but I probably will anyways).

The Almighty Bacon Beer

Front Street Ale House in San Juan, Washington

Considering all the other random things that good ol' bacon has found itself in (i.e. ice cream, mayonnaise, vodka), its not all that surprising that its made an appearance in man's favorite beverage. Unfortunately, bacon beer is a bit like Bigfoot, its rarely seen but much talked about.

Here is some information you (really don't) need to know about these two delicious kindred spirits.

  • Bacon Beer does exist! You can get your fill of it at the Front Street Ale House/San Juan Brewing Company in San Juan, Washington. The Bacon Beer they brew is considered an American Pale Ale and is rather low in alcohol at only 3.1%. Its a "pale ale infused with lean bacon". They also brew a pepper beer called Ale Diablo.
  • No, Schlenkerla is not bacon beer. I keep reading articles saying that the extremely smokey beer from Bamberg, Germany is bacon beer. Yeah, it might be smokey like bacon but there is no bacon in it and all similarities are coincidental.
  • Brooklyn Brewery is apparently working on a barleywine that will be made using malt that was smoked in the same room as bacon from Benton's Smoky Mountain Country Hams in Tennessee. Below is an excerpt from the NY Times Diner's Journal Blog from August 11th:

Garrett Oliver told the NY Times, "It’s almost terrifying how much the malt smells like bacon." His ingenious plan involves infusing a brown ale with the flavor of Benton’s bacon fat through a technique known as "fat washing." The bacon-fat-infused ale is aged in bourbon barrels, and one historic day (t.b.d.) he will blend it with the bacon-smoked malt. And Oliver promises this to a world hushed with anticipation: "Either this will be the most amazingly disgusting thing you’ve ever tasted in your life. Or I shall rule the earth."
  • What? You can't wait for Brooklyn's release and you sure as hell can't afford to go to San Juan, Washington for a pint of bacon beer? Okay, why not make your own "bacon-infused bourbon smoked porter"? Grocery Eats will show you how!

Bacon is great and versatile. So is beer! They belong together even if for only one fleeting moment at a time.

The cannedness of strangers...

If you love beer (a lot) you may be like me when it comes to setting beer-related goals for yourself. Two goals that I am working hard to accomplish are; to review a beer from all fifty US states and to review a beer from the 103 recognized beer styles (according to BeerAdvocate). The latter is not an easy task considering a few of the styles are not sold here in the US, one of which is Happoshu (a Japanese "beer" that is brewed with less than 67% malt in order to avoid the high taxes put on regular 100% malt brews).

I happened to make reference to this beer on BeerAdvocate and to my astonishment someone offered to send me can of Kirin's Sparkling Hop when they returned from Japan. I was in awe that someone would go out of their way to bring beer back from Japan let alone sent it in the mail to me all the way from the other side of the country.

Today, I received a package from Todd out in California and it not only contained the can of Sparkling Hop but also a can of Yona Yona Ale, a Pale Ale that has received a lot of favorable reviews.

Wow, that is just awesome. Cheers Todd! I'll post some reviews of these soon.

Images from Cantillon

No trip to Brussels (or Belgium for that matter) would be complete without taking a tour of the Cantillon Brewery, which is also home to the Brussels Museum of Gueuze - actually they are the same thing.

It is an amazing place and completely open to the public, just show up, pay a small admission fee, get a brochure and you're welcome to walk around and poke into all the corners.

Twice a year they also have open brewing days where you can experience the process from start to finish (starting at 6:30AM). The next session will be held November 7th.

After your tour you're also given a tasting of two of Cantillon's beers (one lambic and one geuze), and are welcome to purchase more.

It's a very unique place, and it's amazing that it is actually located in the city itself. Once you've been there you get a whole new respect for the range of beers Cantillon makes, and you'll certainly think differently the next time you drink one.

Here are some photos from our last visit, highlighting the simplicity of the living museum...

You can't keep a brewery that uses spontaneous fermentation very clean.

The floor is about the only thing that is not ancient...

Someone's been doing some taste testing...

This is where the magic happens...

Since they don't brew in the summer, the vat was empty.

There are rows and rows of this type of thing...

Each one of the barrels is traditionally marked indicating it's contents.

Modern kegs for export. One of these will end up down the street at Akkurat.

Must be nice when you see the Cantillon-mobile coming to your pub.

The Lion's Pride Restaurant & Brewery
(Brunswick, Maine)

Chris Lively, of Ebenezer's fame, recently opened The Lion's Pride in Brunswick, Maine. I happened to be up in Maine this past week and decided to pay a visit.

I don't think I really need to ramble on about how this is one hell of a beer bar, that the interior is pretty sweet and that once they start brewing their own beers to go along with their ridiculous tap list that this place is going to get even better. I don't need to tell you all of that because the pictures below should do all the talking...

a beautiful sight...25 taps of nothing but great beer

hand-blown glass tap handles

some of the "advertised" bottles

 a peak into the brewhouse

sandwiches (the reuben was amazing)

some of the murals inside The Lion's Pride

The Lion's Pride is a place any beer lover would want to call home. With an amazing array of awesome beers on tap and in the cooler this place will only get better once they start brewing their own beers. Ignore all the jibba-jabba that marred the opening and partnership with De Struise, this place is still great and the staff are amazing. If you find yourself within a day's drive of Brunswick be sure to swing by...

Disc Golf Beer Haul

I came home late last night after being away in Maine for a week and was happy to find a nice package on my doorstep. It came all the way from San Diego and was the last leg of a Beer Advocate BIF ("Beer it Forward") that I began a few months back.

It was a frisbee golf theme that involved sending another participant at least one can of craft beer (for the course), a disc golf disc and some other beers that the person might want, that person would in turn send another package to another person on the list and so on and so forth.

From left to right:

Brooklyn Lager - Brooklyn Brewery (Brooklyn, NY)

Siamese Twin Ale - Uncommon Brewers (Santa Cruz, CA)

Blue Dot dIPA  - Hair of the Dog Brewing Co. (Portland, OR)

Speedway Stout - Alesmith Brewing Co. (San Diego, CA)

Double Wide Double IPA - Boulevard Brewing Co. (KC, MO)

Pliny the Elder - Russian River Brewing Co. (Santa Rosa, CA)

My beer cellar...a work in progress

Finally got all of my beer and glasses out of the boxes and put away after the move into my new house. I'm using two old bookshelves to store my beer in a room in the basement thats finished and stays about 63 degrees year round.

Once the bar is built I'll shift things around and put away the glassware as well. For now its nice to just have a beer and look at all those bottles.

If you've got pictures of your beer cellar we'd love to post them, you can send them to twinbeer@gmail.com

Cheers!

Julio's in Westborough, Massachusetts
The Best Beer Store in New England!

I've been to a lot of beer stores over the past 8 years that I've lived in New England. There are definitely quite a few that I consider great, however there is one store that ranks above all the others and that, my beer-loving friends, is Julio's Liquors in Westborough, Massachusetts.

Instead of rambling on and on about why I think Julio's is the best, below are my Top 10 reasons, followed by some pictures of just how awesome this place truly is!

10. Easy to find. Right near several major highways, Julio's is easy to get to and there is plenty of parking. There is even a Starbuck's next door if all the beer shopping makes you a little tired.

9. Beer loving staff. The staff that works in the beer section really knows their stuff. They are friendly and love to talk about beer. That means a lot to people that drive a long way to go to a beer store believe me!

8. Mix-a-six. They have holders on the top of the aisles and individual prices. Grab stuff warm or cold. Also...

7. Wild Six Program. Every 6th time you mix-a-six pack you get a gift!

6. 15% off. If you buy six bottles. Buy six bottles and get 15% off the price of each bottle. This also applies to ANY six bottles purchased and not just twelve ounce bottles.

5. Tastings. Julio's does "Beer Tasting with Tom" every Monday. I was at the Mikkeler tasting it was fantastic. They also have brewery reps in quite a bit doing tastings.

4. Festivals. Julio's even holds their own Belgian Beer Festival! This year's will feature quite a few Belgian beers, chocolate, cheese and even fresh made waffles!

3. Selection. It truly is amazing just to walk around and look at ALL of the beers they have. Quantity and diversity at its best!

2. Hard to find beers. A lot of beer stores carry a lot of beer but most of the time its the same old stuff. Julio's get stuff I do NOT see anywhere else. (Examples: Lost Abbey Angel's Share in stock 7/21, Cascade (OR) Sang Royal Northwest Sour Red Ale and others, Uinta beers from Utah, random stuff from Japan, Sweden, Denmark...you name it!)

1. Exclusive beers. Julio's even has beers that are ONLY available at Julio's! That is, these are beers that are being made by breweries exclusively for sale at this store and this store only. Berkshire Brewing Company brews and barrel ages a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale exclusively for Julio's. Next month, Julio's will be selling a beer called L’Ange Tombe Saison Noire, a "black saison, which was produced by a collaboration with SBS Imports and De Proef in Belgium. Are you kidding me?!?!?

Berkshire Brewing Company's Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale

The Fall Angel, a "Black Saison", is brewed exclusively for Julio's!

I believe that the additional photos below (which I took today) should change the mind of any naysayers or non-believers! Also, they are pretty drool inducing so you might want to have a beer in hand when you look at them...

count the coolers...wow, just look at all that beer...

no shortage of bombers...

Wild Devil, Cascade Sours, Local 1 & 2, Dogfish, Pike...

Lots of Lost Abbey and Port Brewing beers, wait what is that...

Lost Abbey Angel's Share (not a beer you see everyday)

even more stuff that doesn't fit on the shelves...

Belgians anyone?

plenty to choose from...

Serious Vintage!

lots of history here...

When it comes to finding beers that are over twenty-years old and still drinkable you either turn to Belgium or the United Kindgom. These three come from the latter and I can only imagine how complex and delicious they'd be to sample.

From left to right:

Thomas Hardy's Ale 150th Anniversary (1987 Vintage) - This commemorative brew was matured in oak, rolled daily, hand bottled with a full long cork. The bottles sport a red velvet sash and "A" prefix just like the original 1968 pints and half-pints. Only 2700 bottles were issued so surviving examples are rare.

George Gale & Co. Prize Old Ale (? Vintage)- Gale Brewing was bought by Fullers in 2005. They are producing a version of this beer today but its likely not done in a comparable way to the original.

Greene King & Sons Jubilee Ale (1977 Vintage) - The "Jubilee" in the name refers to the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. For a picture of what this bottle looks like in mint condition go HERE

Thanks again to James for this picture of some truly amazing old beer! Cheers!

Waxing Poetic...

like a box of crayons (you can drink)

If you are worried about nasty things like oxygen getting into your precious cellared beers you can allay your fears with a little bit of warm wax.

The wax you want is one that is FDA approved, so don't go melting down a Yankee Candle and dipping your bottles in that. A bag of wax pellets will set you back about $8-9 and most home brew supply shops sell them. They come in several fancy colors so be sure to pick one that matches well with your beers outfit.

Waxing makes your beers look even cooler and should set aside your worries about beer going bad after years of sitting in a cool, dark place. Nothing is worse than total disappointment when you're expecting anything but!

In this picture (from Left to Right):

Nefarious Ten Pin Porter from Ska Brewing Co. in Durango, CO

Alaskan Baltic Porter from Alaskan Brewing Co. in Juneau, AK

The Abyss from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR

The Dissident from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR

Behemoth from Three Floyds Brewing Co. in Munster, IN

Beer Waxing 101 - wax (and cellar) only beers that are higher in ABV (think Imperial Stouts and Barleywines) and avoid anything super hoppy as those should be drank fresh. Melt your FDA approved wax pellets in something easy to clean or reuse. Get the dipping motion down, it takes a lot practice to keep things clean and the right consistency on the bottle. Sit back and enjoy as your beers are now ready to be vintage!

Russian Imperial Stouts in small bottles

nine bottles of dark, mysterious, high gravity goodness!

Most of the Russian Imperial Stouts I see around tend to come in 22-ounce or 750 mL bottles. There are however a few that come in 12- ounce bottles which are normally sold in 4-packs but sometimes 6-packs if you're lucky (Brooklyn & Duck-Rabbit). These little beauties are all sitting quietly and mellowing in my cellar for that perfect fall or winter evening.

From left to right:

Left Hand Imperial Stout from Left Hand Brewing (CO)

Boaks Monster Mash from Boak Beverage (NJ)

Victory Storm King from Victory Brewing (PA)

Northwind Imperial Stout from Two Brothers Brewing (IL)

Imperial Stout from Odell Brewing (CO)

Imperial Stout from Arcadia Ales (MI)

Siberian Night from Thirsty Dog Brewing (OH)

Rabid Duck from The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery (NC)

Black Chocolate Stout from Brooklyn Brewery (NY)

Smuttynose Big Beer Series:
Collect and drink them all!

The Smuttynose Big Beer Series

Smuttynose Brewing Company of Portsmouth, New Hampshire is by far one of my favorite breweries on the East Coast. Everything they put out is enjoyable and total quality.

Years ago a bunch of us were lucky enough to get a tour of the brewery from noneother than Peter Egelston, the owner and founder of Smuttynose. Peter is a great guy and showed the passion that is needed to keep a good thing getting better and better. I am always looking forward to the next beer they release.

From the Smuttynose site:

Big Beers in Big Bottles. Launched in 1998, our Big Beer Series consists of rotating editions of limited release beers. Because of the small quantities we produce, and the sporadic nature of their release, coupled with the fact that we don’t make every style every year, these beers are sometimes maddeningly hard to find. Sorry about that!
