Zlatopramen Extra Premium
(Pivovar Zlatopramen)

Zlatopramen Extra Premium

Brewed in the northern part of the Czech Republic, Zlatopramen does a good amount of exporting and is found in quite a number of pubs here in Stockholm. It is also available at most beer stores in the country. The brewery itself has been in operation since 1642, and has won quite a few awards.

This is Zlatopramen's "Extra Premium", what gives it that honorable description I don't know. It is a lager, rather than a pilsner, and the bottle claims that it has a good amount of hops.

Pours a golden yellow color, with a big fat fluffy lunar landscape head, with lots of bubbling. Leaves a lot of wash around the edges of the glass - the Czechs really know how to do the head on a beer...

Smells musty! Like a basement or old cork. Traces of hops, but if so they aren't the freshest ones, mostly malt. Quite an aroma on this beer, and despite what it sounds like, not a bad one.

The taste is very sweet to start off with, then mellows through the hops and stops abruptly with a long malty finish. The crispness that to me defines Czech beers isn't there, this is much smoother.

Not at all a bad beer, not something that will impress your neighbors, boss or kin folk, but you won't go wrong by ordering a pint or buying a few bottles. If you want something that will taste like it came from the Czech Republic, and give you that unique experience, then this will do it - and it's inexpensive!

Saku Kuld
(Saku Brewery LTD)

Saku Kuld

When you think of Estonia you (probably don't) think of it as one of the more exciting beer brewing nations. Personally, my experience with this brewery and all Estonian beers is that they always have a grain alcohol taste to them.

Saku, the largest brewery in Estonia, has actually been so bold as to release a lemon and tequila flavored beer. It amazes me that any brewery - let alone one in the Baltic states - would actually follow the horribly failed Tequiza that Anheuser-Busch lauded upon the world. That should give you an idea of what we are dealing with here. Thankfully, this is not that, but rather what the brewery calls Kuld. If you think that means "gold" in Estonian you'd be right.

Pours an amazingly clear light yellow color. The picture above actually gives it more credit than it deserves. The head is fluffy but weak and fades quickly into the beer without much of a trace.

Smells wheaty - and yes, slightly of grain alcohol, with some malt. Has that hint of sourness that always scares me when it comes to larger breweries.

The taste is much better than expected. Not amazing, but one was prepared for the worst. Not overly carbonated which is a very good thing in this case. One can taste some sweetness at the end, which saves the beer from being very bland. The initial taste is, well, just lager.

Granted, this will never be your favorite beer, and it will never be one that I choose to buy again out of any sort of allegiance. It is drinkable but by no means something to blog about tell your friends about. A safe bet if you find yourself in Tallinn on a Friday night with no other options but Ukrainian wine or Estonian vodka - which is about a nice a thing as anyone can say about it.
