If they brewed beer... Part 4
Red Dwarf

Red Dwarf, if you aren't familiar with the British comedy series, ran from between 1988-1999 on BBC 2. It recently had a reunion show of sorts in the form of a three part episode (Back to Earth) run this past Easter. There was an absolutely abysmal US version that ran, I believe, a total of two episodes.

As like any popular tv show you can get hordes of Red Dwarf branded products...so why not beer.

Here are 7 labels, featuring the more prominent characters, with an attempt at using images from some of the more memorable episodes from the 8 seasons the show ran.

If they brewed beer... Part 3 (2)
More Goonies

HopperpotThere have been some suggestions for additional Goonies beers, many of which have been great. And it's a shame I probably won't have time to make them all. One that I felt was absolutely something that couldn't be passed up was the Chester Copperpot "Hopperpot". And so, one more Goonie beer, this time a Double IPA in a limited edition 22 oz size (also available on tap in Astoria).

Please tell me someone out there has an interest in making a home brew for next year's 25th Anniversary of the film with this name. It's too fitting to pass up!

The original post with all 8 Goonies beer labels can be found on the blog here:

If they brewed beer... Part 3
The Goonies

I count myself one of the many who grew up loving this film as a kid, and still do. Granted it's not a company like Penguin or Apple like the previous designs, but they do a good deal of merchandising - even 20+ years since the film's release. You can buy just about anything with the Goonies logo on it - not just t-shirts - heck you can even buy a replica of One Eyed Willy's map. (Which is helpful if you want to go looking for rich stuff.) Although my personal favorite are the Goonie branded pair of Pumas. So, I'm sure beer isn't too far a stretch - they are in Oregon which helps.

I tried to come up with a fitting moment for each one of the actual Goonies - sorry Fratellis and Chester Copperpot maybe next time. There are 8 in total. So, without further ado, direct from Astoria, Oregon, Goondock Brewery's Goonies beers:

If they brewed beer... Part 2
Penguin Books

Part 2 of a series of hypothetical labels for companies that don't brew beer - but if they did...

Penguin LagerPenguin Books have always been a pillar in the world of design. The simplicity of the original orange/white covers has become iconic when it comes to paperback books. Through the years there have been a number of styles, each a showcase of some of the best graphic design of that era.

I picked out 4 from the last 70+ years and rehashed them into labels for a fictitious set of beers. The idea was that the labels themselves would be put on starting from the left, so that the far right was centered on the bottle. A simple penguin would be on the neck for alignment.

Would be fun to carry on with these, since there are so many great designs to imitate. Since Penguin has gotten into the non-book market with deck chairs, coffee mugs, pencils and more - who knows maybe they may someday get into brewing...

If they brewed beer... Part 1
Apple Computer, Inc.

I thought it would be an amusing little project to create some crossover products for some famous companies to see what they could theoretically look like. For the sake of this blog, the obvious product in mind was beer. This will be an ongoing series.

Apple IPAThe first company that came to mind was Apple, probably because I spend a lot of time staring at Macs. They are well situated to brew beer in California, and to be honest they would probably do a good job at selling it. They tend to be a good at selling just about everything else.

Apple has created a lot of interesting products (besides iPhones and computers) over the years. My personal favorite were the employee shoes, in addition they've also made televisions, digital cameras, and yes, Newtons. But, what would the labels look like if they made beer? Here's a thought...

I originally had thoughts of creating some witty Apple-esque names, but I can't imagine the company would have even considered things like Lowercase iPA, Wireless Stout or Cupertino Lager. In the end "iPA" was too obvious to pass up, and if they ever actually did produce something called an "IPA" it would be written "iPA" 99 out of 100 times anyways.

I think next up will be Penguin Books, a company I've always greatly admired for their designs. Should be amusing to try to crossbrand paperback books and beer...
